Comeback Medvedev Wins First Title in Over Two Years
19 of Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been achieved on hard courts
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial championship for nearly 30 months with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the competition championship match.
The Russian, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a torrid year, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the American major.
The player's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and struggles with his service game in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and finally splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive victory over Frenchman Moutet.
This represents his first title after the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt after spring of that year.
Victory also means he has achieved twenty-one victories at twenty-one various competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my two daughters together, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," stated ranked player Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my second daughter her name, because the maiden victory I achieved when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the past champion, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, featuring in Halle in the past months.
Medvedev's defensive play style and frequent reactions on the tennis court had caused observers to question if his skill to play at the highest level was over.
However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, striving to approach the net and perform positively, backed up by an improved service.
He recovered from a deficit in the opening set against the difficult Frenchman, winning 4 of the last five exchanges to gain the advantage.
Both players exchanged breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden ATP Tour victory, took control to push for a decider.
He rescued 4 early-game opportunities in a close final set before the Russian won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Appropriately, the winner clinched victory with a shot at the net, with Moutet unable to control a shot after a lengthy match.
