No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
