Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the right to contest certain rulings made by the official, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
